Everyone has a story

Dear Sixteen-Year-Old Me,
Right now you are so consumed with your boyfriend and being a mother to everyone because you lacked the presence of your own. You are so lost right now and don’t have a clue about life. You don’t have any goals or insight into your future. My advice to you is to cherish your youth. You will have plenty of time to be an adult but once your childhood is over, it’s over. Get involved in as many extracurricular activities as you can because they help you to figure out what you’re capable of and helps you to gain the confidence that you so need. You also need to be more open to meeting new people. Don’t be so quick to pass judgement because everyone has a story and what you think of them doesn’t really matter, but it does matter how you treat them. I commend you on your ability to stay out of drama but do not miss out on life trying to avoid people. Next I want you to recognize who you are and what you are worth. Maya Angelou said that when people show you who they are, believe them. Live by that saying because it is so true and will eliminate a lot of hurt, heartache and self doubt. Don’t compromise your feelings for someone else’s sake. If you don’t put yourself first no one else will either. You are important and your thoughts and feelings matter. Always be honest but do so in love and not anger or spite.
Also, don’t be so hard on your grandmother because she won’t be around much longer and she’s the only mother you will have in your adolescent years. Appreciate the people in your life. Don’t resent them because they aren’t who you really want…the fact of the matter is that they chose to stick by you.
Lastly and most importantly, read the Bible and build a relationship with God. Trust me, if you do that it won’t take you another 16 years to realize all the things I’ve placed into this letter. Be kind in all you do and all that you say because that is the kind of person you are.
Christina, Your 32-year-old self.
