You ARE NOT going mad.

Dear Me

Happy birthday, sweet 16.  I have a gift for you, it’s called confidence, and it may help you do all the things you don’t believe you can do.Firstly, try to ignore all that careers advice. I know how passionate you are about your art and your music and you have a talent for both and to let it die before it can live would be so sad. Dedicate yourself to them, they won’t let you down. Take that year out.  Don’t be afraid to expand your horizons.

The next time you see the doctor, make sure he takes you seriously, you ARE NOT going mad. Don’t be fobbed off by “it’s all in your head” or “it’s a man’s world”. You have a complicated condition, but the right treatment now will save you a whole world of pain in your 20′s, trust me on this one. Barricade yourself in, if you have to.

Just a quick word about your mother. She does love you, but to endlessly waste your time trying to seek her approval will only leave you feeling frustrated and angry. Accept that you are entirely different creatures and just try to get along. It might be a good idea to read up on Middle Child Syndrome as I think it may well save you from becoming a total cliche.

You may not feel it now, but you are precious. Take a good look at your body and try to reframe all the negative things you think that you see, and stop asking the universe for bigger boobs, because it just might be listening after all. You are perfect just the way you are, so save yourself for somebody that ignites the fire in your belly and not just the first boy who shows a passing interest.

You will have your heart broken, the pain of which will be almost too much to take, so it may be an idea to bear this in mind and take good care of others hearts when they see fit to put them in your hands.

Never forget that the world is a beautiful place. It is full of love and light but there will always be people who will take more from you than you are ever willing to give. Try to learn from your experiences so as not to encounter such things again.

Last but not least, always follow your heart. Never be afraid to love. Your instinct is a wonderful thing, if you learn to trust it, you will never be anything less than content.

PS Pull your belly in.
