Never let people tell you who you are

Dear sixteen-year-old Ailish,
You are at the peak of your high school days. Wanting to be involved is awesome and you should absolutely go for it. However, don’t loose site of the things you truly want, and more importantly, don’t loose site of yourself. Try everything once. Don’t over indulge. You may not fully know who you are and what you’re capable of yet, but don’t let that discourage you, because you have a lot of potential. You’re allowed to make mistakes, but when you don’t learn from your mistakes is when you fail. Family is important and one of the only real constant in your life. Appreciate them. Friends and boys will come and go no matter how close you think you are. Your interests will change, and you will become close with people you didn’t imagine or expect to. Embrace it. Embrace it all. Because when life sucks the most there are only two things to get you through it: someone always has it worse and life will get better. Never look at your glass half empty, be thankful that you have a glass with something in it at all. Drink the whole glass and enjoy every drop because life is short and you have to take every opportunity with a positive mindset. Otherwise you’re in for a difficult and frustrating life. But you’re 16, enjoy being young and take each day as it comes to you. Most importantly, be true to yourself always. It sounds like bullshit advice now, but you’d be surprised how much happier you’ll be if you follow it. If anything promise me this: never let people tell you who you are or who you have to be or that you can’t do anything. Because if you try hard enough you seriously can accomplish whatever you want. All you have to do is be true to yourself and know who you are. And the only way to do that is live. So go live, and do it with no regrets.
