There wasn’t enough time to produce two shows and hold down a job. There are no bad opportunities if you have only one. Through one of my Yale classmates I met art director Marla Weinhof. She worked for prominent photographers, among them Richard Avedon and Steven Meisel. I started as a grip on the set for $100 a day plus lunch. More importantly, it afforded a lot of time to work on my art. Later I was asked to design and fabricate sets in my studio for designers such as Dolce & Gabbana. These jobs were great because of the fast turnaround and big budgets.

I think of this time only in months, not knowing how long the work will continue to sell and trying not to obsess about it. Fear is a tool – it is more frightening to think of not evolving within my practice than not selling the work. Every day, I feel so fortunate to be able to go into my studio and make art. 37 BLANE DE ST. CROIX 38 BLANE DE ST. Writing forces me to slow down and reflect. The chief organizational tools that I use to manage my studio are keeping a running to-do list and a calendar. Both become another form of journaling. Since my work is labor- and time-intensive, I set doable goals that insure progress from day-to-day. A day of work may entail completing a full stage in the process of making a large piece. The length of the day is determined by the time it takes to complete the goal. Typically an extended body of work will take two or three years to complete.
