They were all normal readers at age 8, although one had deficits in written language. Josh, a second child, was identified as a late talker at 25 months. His mother (a psychologist), his father (an economist), and his older brother all had normal language histories. Josh had a history of chronic otitis media and received ear tubes at 20 months of age. At intake, Josh had a reported vocabulary of ten words on the LDS (Rescorla, 1989); he scored at the 15month level on expressive language on the Reynell Developmental Language Scales (Reynell, 1977), but at the 26-month age level in receptive language.

Results of vocabulary laboratory studies in children with SLI are somewhat equivocal, but they suggest greater impairments in the production than the comprehension of lexical items. , a “fast-mapping” procedure); however, only one of the 11 subjects with SLI could produce the word correctly, whereas 7 of the comparison children could do so.
