A minority refused to surrender. Einion Sais of Bodorgan became an outlaw, losing some of his lands. True to character, Gwilym and Rhys ap Tudur remained unrepentant, though there were no further audacious military exploits to record. Also listed among those who did not submit was their younger brother Maredudd and a kinsman, Gwilym ap Gruffydd ap Gwilym. Among the hundred or so islanders who had sacrificed their lives was Gwilym ap Gruffydd ap Tudur Llwyd, a wealthy landowner, who died fighting in front of Beaumaris castle.

Another way to channel Welsh energies was through military service in Scotland and France. Five hundred soldiers from Anglesey were recruited in 1298 to fight for Edward I in Scotland. The eminent royalist Iorwerth Foel led seventy archers in the abortive 1310 campaign. As the king’s chief military recruiter in north Wales, Sir Gruffydd Llwyd raised forces on a number of occasions; he was probably present at the battle of Bannockburn, which heralded Scottish freedom. But archers and spearmen from Gwynedd were fighting England’s battles.

Beaumaris might have been planned as an English outpost, but there was an active Welsh presence in the borough from the outset. Most remarkable was the way certain individuals rose quickly to the top. Dafydd ab Einion, formerly of Llan-faes, and who may have served Llywelyn ap Gruffydd before 1282, turned out to be the richest burgess in 1305. Another enterprising Welshman was Einion ab Ieuan, the sheriff of Anglesey, who held office as bailiff. Mindful of their privileges, the resentful English element – drawn mainly from Cheshire – made frequent attempts to debar the Welsh.
