As commercial power became more common, the artillery came to rely on it, retaining the battery power plant as a backup. I;or years, the batteries were plagued by dampness, injurious to both ammunition and electrical equipment. The engineers learned to design batteries with air passages and ventilation, while modifying older batteries to decrease and control the moisture. In addition, experience had shown that the loading platform, the concrete surface surrounding the gun, did not allow enough room to efficiently ram the projectiles and powder.
