To help overcome the monotony and drudgery that unfairly burdened her life, my mother pursued the study of operatic music with her beautiful and powerful contralto. She insisted that I obtain some cultural influences and required me to study elocution, music, and dance, which aided my later life by giving me greater assurance when making public appearances and speaking to large audiences.  I was nine years old then.  A small cash settlement was eventually awarded for my care.  Then Congress extended the draft to include fortyfiveyearolds.

The only legal case the government had against him was as a foreignborn member of the Communist party, not for any actions that could be classed as violations of law.  Elevating blacks to top Party positions did not cure that problem.  Many blacks made it known that they were more concerned with ending discrimination so they could live as equal human beings here and now.  An insurance group, the International Worker's Order, serviced these language groups quite successfully for many years.  Then I discovered that most of the active leaders were unfamiliar with the academic background of the Party theories and relied instead on current orders and directives from the top national leaders.

My father's family was eventually driven out of that area after several gun battles, during one of which the log cabin in which they lived was burned down.  Those concepts were very meaningful to me because they built on some of my high school readings, such as Jane Addam's Hull House, Victor Hugo's Les Miserables, Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice and Karl Marx's Das Kapital, which helped convince me that the problems of misery for the poor could only be corrected by changing capitalism to socialism.
