A man of this name is recorded as of high reputation, but there is no document to link him to the group of portraits usually attributed to him. These are smaller in scale and more naturalistic than those given to Clouet, and less eclectic. They belong within the sphere of northern painting, but with a characteristically French simplicity and directness. Portraiture was as popular in the France of the sixteenth century as it was among the Elizabethans in England.
